A threedimensional FEM model was developed to study the cause of flow rutting with the rutting analysis method based on lateral displacement instead of the traditional method based on vertical displacement. The study results show that the rut evaluation method by lateral displacement tendency of asphalt layers can simply and clearly explain the form and cause of flow rutting of asphalt pavement. The surface layer tends to appear plastic flow rutting when the structural module composition for surface and middle layers is not coordinated.
