The history of Journal of Tongji University can be traced back to 1918. At the proposal of Principal RuanShangjie, TongjiMedicine and Engineering College published Tongji,the first bi-monthly academic journal, whose editor-in-chief was Huang Shengbai.Tongjihas three parts: the first part is for experts and researchers, the second part is for ordinary citizens, and the third partis miscellaneous articles, including notes, letters, and introductionto new books. It was praised as “our ideal journal” by domestic scholars. After that, the college has successively published a variety of academic journals, such as Consciousness Monthly, Journal of Tongji, Tongji Medical Monthly,etc. After the founding of the People’s Republicof China, Tongji University began to publish Journal of Tongji University, a comprehensive academic journal of natural science, in 1956. It changed its name to Journal of Tongji University (Natural Science edition) in 1997.

From 1956 to the end of 2020,Journal of Tongji University (Natural Science edition)has published 48 volumes, over 400 issues, more than 10, 000 papers, including theworks ofseveral academic masters. For instance, Mr Li Guohao, an academician of both Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, published his papersin this journal many times,among which his paper published in 1994still have profound influences in academic research. Since the papers published in the journal have high values in both academic theory and application, they are often referenced by scientific and technological personnel both domestically and abroad. Ithas made great contributionsto promoting scientific development and exchanges in scientific research in China.

Through continuous reform, development, and innovation, Journal of Tongji University (Natural Science edition)has become a highly influential academic journal especially in civil engineering. It is one of the core journals of natural science and one of the statistical source journals of scientific and technological papers in China. It also has been indexed by EI Compendex and Core Journals (selected) databasein China and other more than 40 important databases at home and abroad.In terms of print edition, it not only has a large number of subscribers in China, but also distributes to foreign countries through China International Bookstore, and has established publication exchange relations with more than 70 universities in Germany, Japan and the United States. In terms of online publishing, its annual online reading exceeds 3 million times, and annual download exceeds 500,000 times in 2020, according to incomplete statistics.

In 2002, the journal was selected into theDouble Hundred Periodicalsof Chinese Journal Matrix. In 2003, it won the Second National Periodical Award (for100Key Scientific and Technological Journals). In 2004, it won the first prize of Excellent Scientific and Technological Periodicals of the Ministry of Education. In 2005, it won the Third National Periodical Award (for 100Key Scientific and Technological Journals).In 2006, it wasselected into the First High-Quality Science and Technology Journals of Universities in China. In 2007, it was selected intothe Sixth 100Outstanding Academic Journals in China. In 2008, it was selected into the Second High-Quality Science and Technology Journals of Universities, and the 300 High-Quality Science and Technology Periodicals in China. In 2009, it won the fourth East China Excellent Periodical Award. In 2010, it was selected into the Third High-Quality Science and Technology Journals of Universities, and was selected into the100 Outstanding Academic Journals in China. In 2011, it was selected into100 Outstanding Academic Journals,and 300 High-QualityScientific and Technological Journals in China. In 2012, it was rated as the Most Internationally Influential Academic Journal in China, selected into 100 Outstanding Academic Journals in China, the Fourth High-Quality Science and Technology Journals of Universities in China, and the first prize of Excellent Online Journals of Science and Technology Papers in China. In 2019, it was selected into the Excellence Program of Scientific and TechnologicalJournalsin China.

Journal of Tongji University (Natural Science edition) has made great contributions to discipline construction and academic talent cultivation. Itsacademic influence has always been in the top set of similar journals. In recent years, its average annual download has remainedat approximately 500,000 times. According to the report of China Scientometrics and Bibliometrics Research Center in 2018,its influence index CI(619.735) ranked 4th, and its impact factor JIF(1.147) ranked 15th among the 429 comprehensive sci-tech journals in China. Itsworld academic journals index WAJCI(1.268) ranked 57th in Q2 among the 148 comprehensive sci-tech journals selected worldwide.
